Exactly where Texas deserves to end 2018 in the polls

There’s no exact science to the placement for the final AP Poll. The one certainty is that there is the least amount of argument for that last set of rankings than any other during the season. Teams have a full body of work presented to the voters and there aren’t many valid “what-if” scenarios left in play.

In terms of where Texas football should land, inside the top 10 would be nice to see. Georgia should definitely be ranked lower than the Horns no matter what happens. Even though Texas has four losses compared to Georgia’s three, it thoroughly controlled the Sugar Bowl and deserves to be ahead in every poll.

All of the teams that were in the four team Playoff field are likely to finish ahead of the Horns and Dawgs. The only non-Playoff team that should be ranked ahead of any of the teams that actually made it is the Ohio State Buckeyes. Oklahoma’s only competitor that had a valid case to make it into the Playoff was Ohio State, and the Buckeyes knocked off the Washington Huskies to win the Rose Bowl.

The final placement for the Horns should be as the top four-loss team in the nation. Spotting them around No. 8 or 9 seems about right given the circumstances of the surrounding teams. Yet, somehow the final AP Poll placed Georgia ahead of the Horns, as it was tied with the Florida Gators at No. 7. Texas football finished No. 9 in the AP Poll.
