5. Jaxson Hayes commanding the paint

There were some high points for the breakout freshman Texas basketball forward Jaxson Hayes in the loss to Texas Tech over the weekend. Hayes tied a career high in points, but he also set a new career mark in turnovers. He finished the game with 15 points, five rebounds, one block, and four turnovers.

All five of the rebounds Hayes came up with in the loss to Texas Tech were on the defensive end of the floor. Hayes was hitting a streak near the end of the non-conference slate to where he was more efficient on the offensive boards. But, he only has one offensive board in the past three games. Something has to give for Hayes in terms of offensive rebounding soon.

What better way for Hayes to respond in the offensive rebounding department than with a huge effort against a team like the Jayhawks. Hayes has yet to take on a team like Kansas in his short collegiate career, but he has to be a difference maker on a stage like this.

The good news for Hayes is that he is posting some solid scoring numbers and stayed in less foul trouble in the past two games. The biggest issue that plagued Hayes to start his collegiate career was with personal fouls. Smart had to put him on the bench early in games due to the foul trouble for Hayes. But, he’s getting on the right track just in time to take on the vaunted Kansas front court.
