Texas Basketball: 5 reasons Longhorns upset Kansas Jayhawks
1. Depth comes through for Texas
We just covered how the bench scoring could be a detriment for the Jayhawks when facing an underrated Big 12 opponent. The Texas bench scoring is going to be huge in providing relief for the starting five that produced of late. It’s only a matter of time before freshman point guard Courtney Ramey and former transfer guard Elijah Mitrou-Long breaks through. Each had a good showing against Texas Tech.
Texas basketball gets to face the wild atmosphere that is Allen Fieldhouse, which will make the task of pulling off the upset much more difficult. Kansas just doesn’t lose in Allen Fieldhouse often, but that what makes this opportunity for the Horns so special. Everyone is doubting them coming off two tough losses against Oklahoma State and Texas Tech.
No one will see what Texas could be coming with in Lawrence, KS, on Jan. 14. Kansas is riding the high of taking care of business against the TCU Horned Frogs and Baylor Bears in the past two games to get back on track after the loss to Iowa State on the road. Texas now has its shot at getting back on track with a marquee victory that would be memorable for a while for Smart.
Texas is an eight-point underdog to the Jayhawks, which is one of the biggest spreads against them this season. The last time Texas came out as this heavy of an underdog, it went really well for them. It resulted in the 92-89 upset victory over the North Carolina Tar Heels in the Las Vegas Invitational. A similar storyline against the Jayhawks would be huge for this program.
