Texas Football: 3 potential landing spots for QB Casey Thompson
1. SMU Mustangs
If the set of early key skill position transfers in the Big 12, and from Texas football, are any indication, smaller programs in this region of the country could get some big boosts heading into 2019. For example, sophomore running back Toneil Carter just announced his commitment to the FCS Sam Houston State Bearcats and former Oklahoma State wide receivers Jalen McCleskey took a redshirt this year and and taking his talents to Tulane.
If Thompson elects to follow a similar path as Carter and McCleskey, an in-state Group of Five program could be a great landing spot. The SMU Mustangs could be a good fit since that offense usually tends to thrive with a capable dual-threat quarterback leading the way. SMU also offered Thompson out of Newcastle High School in Oklahoma.
There’s still traces of the Chad Morris-offensive scheme with SMU now. But, current SMU head coach Sonny Dykes also runs a scheme that is beneficial to Thompson’s skill set. SMU’s current starting quarterback isn’t as elusive and doesn’t have as high of ceiling as Thompson, but he does have the underrated ability to scramble when the pocket breaks down. That plays into his benefit.
This is also a good situation for Thompson since he could compete with second-year quarterback William Brown through staring during the 2020 campaign. That would leave him and the Mustangs very well off for three years with a talented offense that could make some noise in the American Athletic Conference.
