Texas Football: Assessing Utah transfer QB Cameron Rising fit
What Cam Rising brings to the Utah offense
Cameron Rising is a former top 15 ranked 2018 high school prospect in the nation at his position during his recruiting cycle. He has plenty of talent and upside that he’ll bring to the Utah football program. But, the real question is how well his talent will translate and fit with the unique scheme that goes with the Utes.
With how quickly the Utah passing game can operate with a load of short and intermediate routes, the strong arm and quick decision making Rising showed at Newbury Park High School is key. His skill set does fit well with how often the Utah offense likes to work its skill position players in off the line of scrimmage.
Moreover, the strength of the Utah offense is usually the ground game. The two quarterbacks that got the bulk of the playing time last fall for the Utes, junior Tyler Huntley and redshirt freshman Jason Shelley, are both prototypical dual-threat signal callers. Rising doesn’t have as much pure foot speed as Huntley or Shelley, but his is very elusive given his recruitment classification as a pro-style quarterback.
The reads for the run-pass option would have develop over the course of the next year or so for Rising. If he is able to make that adjustment in the Utah offense, he’ll be set to thrive in this scheme. Most indications show that Rising’s skill set is a good fit for the Utah offense, but he’ll have to adapt some to this style and pace of play.
