Can the 2020 Texas football recruiting class gain enough interest from five-star cornerback Kelee Ringo to add his talent to the secondary?

The 2019 Texas football recruiting class is roughly a month from rounding out before National Signing Day. There is very little that head coach Tom Herman has left to do for the current Texas football recruiting class to add to it this cycle. But, he can start to pile up the key commitments for the 2020 Texas football recruiting class heading into the prime period of the 2019 off-season.

Among the top uncommitted prospects for the 2020 cycle, Texas football recruiting has a big stake in one that could add a lot to the defensive side of the ball. From the moment that five-star Scottsdale, AZ, cornerback Kelee Ringo steps up campus at whichever school he commits to, he could make some valuable early contributions.

At 6-foot-2 and 200 pounds, Ringo already almost has the ideal weight that NFL scouts look for from the prototypical cornerback prospect. He’s also got tremendous ball skills and physical ability in coverage that makes him an ideal cornerback to play against the high-powered offenses in the Big 12.

The Texas Longhorns underwent some heavy losses at cornerback this off-season, mainly seniors Davante Davis and Kris Boyd. It could be a long process for the Horns to find its go-to starters at cornerback. Bringing in a prospect as talented as the nation’s second best 2020 high school cornerback could help remedy that issue immediately.

Moreover, Ringo ranks as the nation’s No. 10 2020 high school prospect in the nation and the best out of the state of Arizona. He would be the best defensive back the Horns hit on the recruiting trail ever, according to 247Sports classifications.

The 2019 Texas football recruiting class had a large presence of Arizona natives. The pipeline the Horns are establishing in that state helped land talented recruits like four-star tight end Brayden Liebrock and the Gatorade National High School Player of the Year, four-star wide receiver Jake Smith.

Keeping the Arizona pipeline alive for the 2020 recruiting cycle to land this Saguero High School standout is key. According to the 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions, the 2020 Texas football recruiting class has a 50 percent shot at landing the commitment from Ringo. Head coach Chris Petersen and the Washington Huskies hold the other 50 percent chance to land his commitment.

Rivals FutureCast gives Washington the edge over Texas to land Ringo’s commitment. But, there could still be a long time left before Ringo announces his commitment decision. The offer sheet for Ringo recently extended to 33 schools, so he has a lot to choose from. Of the 33 offers, the Big 12 schools for Ringo include the Horns, Oklahoma State Cowboys, Oklahoma Sooners, Iowa State Cyclones, and TCU Horned Frogs.

As Ringo continues to get more national attention, his recruiting interests could grow for the Horns or sway to different schools. There’s a lot of recent activity on his Twitter timeline related to the Ohio State Buckeyes. That could be a team to watch, but one that Herman needs to hold off to land this ultra-talented and program-changing cornerback recruit.
