3. Jaxson Hayes shines despite foul trouble

The issue that continues to plague not only true freshman rising star forward Jaxson Hayes, but the entire Texas basketball front court, got them again in Red River yesterday. No one for the Horns is even close to posting this many fouls in this little amount of time this season as Hayes. His colossal 8.2 fouls per 100 possessions in conference play is a big problem.

In just 22 minutes on the floor, Hayes registered four personal fouls and was forced to hit the bench more than this team would’ve liked. Hayes presented a huge mismatch against the overwhelmed Oklahoma front court. It’s just a shame that Hayes can’t keep himself out of foul trouble for long enough to play in 25 or 30 minutes in a single game.

The amount that Hayes overwhelmed the Oklahoma front court was evident in his stat line. He posted 15 points, six rebounds, and five blocks in just those 22 minutes he played. The issue was those four personal fouls that kept him from possibly achieving a team-high and career-high in points against the Sooners.

Between the rising 2019 NBA Draft stock Hayes is vying for at this point of the regular season, and the impact he can potentially make if he has less foul trouble, there needs to be an answer down the line. Hayes was such a monumental matchup nightmare for the Oklahoma front court, forwards Kristian Doolittle and Brady Manek, that cutting it short could’ve cost the Horns the game.
