Impact on the NCAA Transfer Portal

This would really be the first time that we saw a freshly committed, signed, and early enrolled, 2019 high school prospect that put his name in the NCAA Transfer Portal before spring camp even starts. More than anything, this shows what type of turmoil Clay Helton and the USC football program are in.

To have an early enrollee depart campus before spring camp even starts is a sign and an embarrassment that is hard to match for a blue blood like USC. Losing a player like linebacker Levi Jones or defensive back Bubba Bolden to the transfer market is something that the Trojans can ultimately swallow. But, losing the most highly touted and talented 2019 signee is going to be beyond difficult to move past.

In terms of the bigger picture for the college football landscape, this transfer is set to add a new dynamic to the NCAA Transfer Portal. The concept of a free agency in college football is becoming more of a reality with each passing headline like this. The amount of key quarterback transfers and stars putting their names in the portal is unprecedented compared to the original expectation.

The first domino in terms of seriously impactful news fell with the transfer intentions of former Georgia five-star quarterback Justin Fields going to the Ohio State Buckeyes. It now culminated to a signee from this recruiting cycle picking up and moving halfway across the country to a different football program.
