In a class that is pretty weak at defensive back for the 2019 NFL Draft, there will be a big shot for some huge risers up draft boards in the Senior Bowl. The South Team is even weaker in the secondary than the North Team too. But, one player that could standout in the Senior Bowl in the South Team’s secondary is the former Mississippi State Bulldogs safety Johnathan Abram.

Under first-year head coach, and the former Penn State offensive coordinator, Joe Moorhead is not supposed to be the most sound defensive coach in the nation. But, his Mississippi State defense was still one of the nation’s best, and players like Abram were a big reason why. The former Georgia Bulldogs safety had himself a 2018 season worthy of All-American honors.

There were some strong performances at safety this past season which prevented a player like Abram from receiving those honors. A season that saw him post 99 total tackles, nine tackles for loss, three sacks, two interceptions, five pass deflections, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery highlighted his versatility from the safety spot.

Another name to watch in the South Team’s defensive backfield at safety is the former Virginia Cavaliers talent Juan Thornhill. With a solid showing this week, Abram and Thornhill could work their way into potential early or middle round selections in the 2019 NFL Draft.
