Texas Football: 2019 Horns recruiting class finishing Big 12’s best?
The Big 12 recruiting rankings for the Texas football program for 2019 look to have them finishing in the top spot for the second cycle in a row.
At this point of the recruiting cycle, the 2019 class for Texas football ranks at the top of the Big 12. The 2019 Texas football recruiting class ranks just ahead of the Oklahoma Sooners in the Big 12 after a recent classification adjustment for numerous commits and signees.
The 2019 Texas football recruiting class got a major boost within the past week by landing the former USC Trojans signee, and five-star Mater Dei High School athlete Bru McCoy. Since McCoy was one of the biggest misses for the 2019 recruiting class for the Texas football program, landing that commit after he put his name in the NCAA Transfer Portal to leave USC has a huge impact.
At this point, the Texas Longhorns own the top ranked 2019 recruiting class in the Big 12 and the third best in the nation, according to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings. Texas football got a big bump in the national class rankings when Cuero, TX, wide receiver Jordan Whittington and Plano, TX, safety Tyler Owens were bumped up to five-star prospects.
The combination of the ratings bumps for the 2019 Texas football recruiting class and landing McCoy from the declining USC football program put them from trending as a borderline top 10 ranked class in the nation to a second consecutive No. 3 spot. The 2018 Texas football recruiting class ranked at No. 3 in the nation thanks to a handful of highly rated four-star signees and five-stars.
Moreover, Texas football still has some work to do to hang on to this No. 3 ranked class in the nation. Landing one more commit at a position of need like four-star Dodge City C.C. linebacker Lakia Henry would bolster the ranking of this class. And, Texas needs to hang on to the commitment, and get a signed National Letter of Intent, from four-star Houston, TX, offensive tackle Javonne Shepherd.
Texas football does seem to be losing some of its grip on the commitment from Shepherd that came back in July 2018. Multiple reports, and his Twitter timeline, indicated that Shepherd took a visit with head coach Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs over the weekend. The Texas A&M Aggies also look to be in the running to flip Shepherd.

Player retention and nabbing just one more commit/signee could be enough to not only keep the Horns in the No. 3 slot in the national class rankings, but land the top ranking in the Big 12. Oklahoma sits within striking distance of the Horns, but that margin increased by landing McCoy.
For Oklahoma to jump the Horns, it would take a pretty highly ranked four or five-star commit before National Signing Day. That just doesn’t seem to be in the cards for head coach Lincoln Riley and the Sooners at this point. Oklahoma has 24 commits in its 2019 recruiting class as of Jan. 29 so it pretty much maxed out what it will do this cycle. A top finish in the Big 12 recruiting rankings for the 2019 cycle seems imminent for the Horns.
