Texas Football: 2020 4-star CB target Jaylon Jones selects Texas A&M
A deep pool of cornerback talent that the 2020 Texas football recruiting class could target took a small hit yesterday with Jaylon Jones choosing Texas A&M.
The 2020 Texas football recruiting class is off and running with a strong start for adding to the offensive side of the ball. The defensive side of things is a different story, though, for the next recruiting cycle for Texas football. A big time target for the 2020 Texas football recruiting class just announced a commitment to the biggest in-state rival on Feb. 3.
In a week that is sure to be filled with battles on the recruiting trail between the Texas Longhorns and Texas A&M Aggies, the first of the many dominos that are sure to fall soon came this past Sunday. Head coach Jimbo Fisher and the Aggies had a big start to the week by landing two defensive backs for the 2020 recruiting class. Texas A&M wasn’t able to do anything to add to its 2019 class, but the 2020 cycle is surely off on good footing compared to Texas football.
At least on the defensive side of the ball, the Aggies are generating an early edge for the 2020 recruiting cycle over the Horns. One of the biggest victories the Aggies are sure to claim throughout the entire recruiting cycle for 2020 on defense came by landing the commitment of four-star in-state talented cornerback Jaylon Jones.
The 2020 recruiting class for the Aggies is off to a great start, well ahead of Texas football. This could all change in the coming months, but head Texas football coach Tom Herman needs to do some work on the recruiting trail to catch up to the top ranked class in-state as of Feb. 4. Texas A&M now has seven commits in its 2020 class after landing Jones.
According to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, Texas A&M’s 2020 recruiting class ranks at No. 7 in the nation. Meanwhile, Texas football rings in at No. 19 in the nation now. There’s plenty of work left to do on the recruiting trail for the Horns to keep this level of success from the past few cycles alive for the 2020 class.
Some of the causes for concern for Texas football for the 2020 recruiting cycle is that Texas A&M and the Oklahoma Sooners rank far ahead of them in the national class rankings. The Oklahoma State Cowboys are well within striking distance of the Horns for the 2020 class too. Even former head Texas football coach Mack Brown has a class that now ranks ahead of the Horns, with the North Carolina Tar Heels in the No. 18 slot.
However, Jones is not a prospect that Texas football should give up on at this point. Just because he gave his commitment to Texas A&M doesn’t mean that the Horns can’t win him back at some point. It’s still so early in the 2020 recruiting cycle that Herman needs to stay on Texas A&M commits like five-star wide receiver Demond Demas and Jones.
What the Aggies are getting out of Jones is a sizable 6-foot-3 and 180 pound defensive back that has the physical tools to make an early impact in the secondary. Jones has the size and ball skills to compete against SEC talent, or Big 12 talent for that matter, early in his collegiate career. He ranks as the nation’s No. 124 2020 high school prospect and the 12th best at his position.
