Texas Football: Underrated 3-star CB Ryan Watts grabs Horns attention
One of the more intriguing offers recently dished out from the Texas football program for the 2020 recruiting class went to three-star CB Ryan Watts.
It’s almost like the offers are being shot out of a cannon at this point for the 2020 Texas football recruiting class. With National Signing Day 2019 in the books for this past recruiting cycle, head Texas football coach Tom Herman turns his attention along with the rest of the coaching staff to the 2020 class.
One of the more recent offers dished out by the 2020 Texas football recruiting class went to a very underrated three-star Little Elm High School and Little Elm, TX, native cornerback Ryan Watts. As of Feb. 7, Watts is rated as the No. 462 2020 high school prospect in the nation and the No. 31 cornerback.
However, what Texas football would be getting out of a commitment from Watts is an ideally sized 6-foot-2 and 190 pound defensive back with excellent ball skills. The fact that Watts is just getting a three-star classification from both Rivals and 247Sports is something that programs should take advantage of.
Some of the nation’s better Power Five programs seem to be noticing the value that Watts could provide during his collegiate career. He has a growing offer sheet that now features more than 20 schools, which is big for a 2020 three-star prospect.
Moreover, some of his notable offers came from the Texas Longhorns, Arkansas Razorbacks, Baylor Bears, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Oklahoma Sooners, Oklahoma State Cowboys, Texas A&M Aggies, and Washington Huskies. Watts is quite clearly getting attention from some of the top programs in this region of the country.
When head coach Chris Petersen and the Huskies notice a cornerback this far out of their normal recruiting territory, there is very likely something special to his skill set. The same could be said for the likes of Texas football, Texas A&M, and Notre Dame.
Texas football offered Watts the same day that two fellow Big 12 football programs, Kansas Jayhawks and Kansas State Wildcats, did on Feb. 7. The Horns were busy around National Signing Day 2019 trying to get the early jump on the 2020 recruiting class to build it up to match the prowess from the last two cycles.

Texas is recruiting very well in the secondary for the past few recruiting cycles. Each of the past two Texas football recruiting classes featured at least one five-star defensive back, and numerous four-stars in each. Watts would fit the bill of more of an under-the-radar recruit that could develop into an impact corner.
The highlights for Watts are very impressive, and it looks as if he’s the type of defensive back that is respected so much that opposing quarterbacks just try to throw away from him as much as possible. He’s got quick hips, great agility, and the prototypical ball skills you’d want out of a standout defensive back.
