Best Career on 40 Acres: QB Roschon Johnson

This pick might be more out of hope than reality, but the talent and ceiling are definitely there for this four-star in-state dual-threat quarterback prospect. Port Neches, TX, standout signal caller Roschon Johnson put forward his best efforts in his final season with Port Neches-Groves High School before he makes his way to the Forty Acres.

Johnson is an early enrollee for Texas football to participate in spring camp. This is big for the Horns since Johnson could be counted on as either the backup or third string quarterback this coming season. Depending on how things play out between second-year former four-star dual-threat California native quarterback Casey Thompson and Johnson this year, the future starter under center could fall to the latter.

Thompson’s status with the Texas offense was up in the air entering the off-season as he put his name in the NCAA Transfer Portal along with two other former quarterbacks. The difference between Thompson and the other two quarterbacks is that he’s actually returning to the Forty Acres.

What all this means for Johnson is the potential to start for the Horns by his second or third year on campus. The rise of junior quarterback Sam Ehlinger brought stability to the position for this program, but also gave way for much less opportunity for former quarterbacks like Shane Buechele and Cameron Rising. But, passing the torch from Ehlinger to Johnson would be the perfect handoff for the Horns at the most vital position on the field.
