Dark Horse: OLB Caleb Johnson

The reason for the split up for this part of the superlatives for Texas football for the 2019 signing class is that these two categories aren’t really the same thing. Although some projected him to be an early impact type of recruit anyway, three-star JUCO linebacker Caleb Johnson does qualify also for the biggest dark horse in this class.

Yet, just because a prospect is the biggest dark horse doesn’t mean he’s the most underrated from a recruiting site like 247Sports or Rivals. Johnson is rated as one of the top 40 2019 JUCO prospects in the nation, which is about right given his recruiting platform. But, Johnson does have the right skill set to fit in well with Todd Orlando’s defense.

Most Underrated: TE Brayden Liebrock

Even though four-star Arizona native tight end Brayden Liebrock did get a ratings bump late in the recruiting cycle, it didn’t quite do his skill set and talent level justice. As the nation’s No. 5 tight end, Liebrock is pretty highly touted. But, it wouldn’t be a huge shock if he comes out of this entire 2019 class of recruits as one of the top two or three tight ends.

Liebrock is a candidate to compete for some early playing time since he is such a solid receiving tight end. However, the 6-foot-5 and 220 pound receiving threat fits the ideal mold you’d want for this position and role for pretty much any Big 12 offense. As Herman and offensive coordinator Tim Beck add more personnel that helps their scheme thrive, this group should only get better.
