Best Recruiter: Drew Mehringer

It’s not too difficult to hand out this superlative as it pertains to this 2019 signing class for Texas football. Passing game coordinator, and key Texas assistant coach, Drew Mehringer brought in one of the best hauls at wide receiver that this program will ever see.

Mehringer won the Rivals honors for Recruiter of the Year for the 2019 recruiting cycle, and 247Sports ranked him as the second best recruiting assistant. His haul of five wide receivers that could each be big contributors in their time on the Forty Acres was truly something special that will impact the offense for at least the next three or four seasons.

You could clearly argue that the Horns had the nation’s best wide receiver signing class. But, Oklahoma also had a nice wide receiver haul including five-star elite talent Jadon Haselwood. It looks as if Oklahoma and Texas are set to compete for the Big 12’s best receiving corps for the next few years if the recruiting rankings hold true.

If Mehringer can continue this type of success in hauling in wide receivers for the 2020 recruiting class, this passing game for the Horns could creep among the nation’s very best. Ehlinger’s breakthrough alongside Humphrey and Collin Johnson last season is just the very beginning of what’s to come under Mehringer and Herman’s direction.
