Texas Football: Assessing SMU offense, QB Shane Buechele, transfer fit
How will the adaption setup for the SMU Mustangs and former Texas football quarterback Shane Buechele for the 2019 season?
The expected news that was set for the transfer of former Texas football quarterback Shane Buechele to the SMU Mustangs was finally announced on Feb. 7. The rise of sophomore Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger this past season meant that Buechele would likely be the backup for the rest of his collegiate career if he stayed on the Forty Acres.
With the transfer of Shane Buechele to SMU, one of the most recognizable and viable quarterback names in the NCAA Transfer Portal is now gone. He was also one of the more experienced quarterbacks available on the transfer market.
The plan for Buechele is to graduate and transfer to SMU to join head coach Sonny Dykes immediately eligible to play for two more years. Thanks to the new NCAA redshirt rule, Buechele was able to redshirt and have one year of eligibility back for the 2018 campaign since he only played in two games.
After transferring to SMU, Shane Buechele brings more than 4,500 career passing yards and 34 total touchdowns with 16 interceptions. He is a very capable quarterback that has a lot of starts under his belt. Thriving with an offense like SMU shouldn’t be too difficult for Buechele if the transfer transition is smooth this off-season.
