Look into SMU quarterback room

SMU and Texas would two of the more turbulent programs in terms of quarterback turnover and transfers early in the 2019 off-season. Dykes and the Mustangs lost senior quarterback Ben Hicks to the NCAA Transfer Portal last month. Hicks wound up with his former head coach, Chad Morris, and the Arkansas Razorbacks to possibly be the next starting quarterback there in the SEC West.

Moreover, SMU is essentially exchanging a quarterback that tossed 19 touchdowns and seven picks last season for one with a similar profile when he was starting for the Horns. The only season where Shane Buechele got a full season of starts under his belt was during his true freshman campaign, back in 2016.

Buechele’s only full season starting for the Texas offense was also the last year on the Forty Acres under Charlie Strong. It seemed like Buechele was a more comfortable fit under Strong than he was with current Texas head coach Tom Herman. That makes sense since he was Strong’s recruit and Ehlinger was Herman’s.

Yet, what Buechele is getting himself into with the SMU quarterback room is a young group that he can help develop if he decides to stay for the next two years. Whether it be the promising three-star dual-threat quarterback 2019 signee Terrance Gipson or second-year William Brown, Buechele could help smoothly pass the torch to the next starting signal caller for SMU by the 2021 off-season.
