Texas Football: Assessing SMU offense, QB Shane Buechele, transfer fit
Was this a good move for Shane Buechele
This isn’t the first time that a former Texas starting quarterback that flamed out on the Forty Acres is set to wind up with SMU. We can all remember back to the former five-star Texas quarterback recruit Garrett Gilbert and how rough his tenure was with the program starting after Colt McCoy‘s injury in the 2009 BCS National Championship Game.
The final two years of Gilbert’s collegiate career was spent with SMU as the starting quarterback. But, Gilbert actually had a decent outing during the 2013 season which was his senior campaign. In 2013, Gilbert rounded out his collegiate career with 21 passing touchdowns and just seven interceptions.
However, if Gilbert can do that with SMU back in 2013, the potential with Shane Buechele in this program should be pretty high. The real question at this moment for both Buechele and Texas and SMU fans alike should be how this fit is in Dallas and was it the right decision ultimately? It’s a pretty straightforward answer to that.
Some of the other potential landing spots for Buechele were schools with prominent quarterback openings like Arkansas, the Tennessee Volunteers, and UCLA Bruins. Nothing really stuck out as a good landing spot for Buechele at a Power Five program. There wasn’t any indication of big time programs reaching out to Buechele either. Picking SMU was a good decision for both parties.
