We’re going to start with the candidate that will start in the second spot on most people’s Texas football quarterback depth chart to begin spring camp. Thompson showed some flashes in last year’s spring football game that he could in fact excel in this scheme ran under Beck since he is a very capable runner.

The issue with Thompson is going to be how much he could develop in the passing game. The high school film from Thompson out of the state of Oklahoma still showed he was a raw talent as a pocket passer. He excels when he is able to roll out and use his legs as his primary weapon.

Considering what the Horns are bringing back in the receiving corps this coming season, the coaching staff would love to utilize all of its weapons in the passing game to the fullest extent. That likely means a backup quarterback that is able to hit his targets and go through his reads quickly in the pocket.

Not to say that Thompson can’t develop that ability quickly, or that he already has it, but that is an important factor in the placement of the quarterbacks on this depth chart. Although, Thompson does stand at a similar height to Ehlinger and does have a strong arm, so the two do have something in common in those regards.
