Any number of names could fall in this first slot on the big board for the quarterback targets for the 2020 recruiting class for Texas football. At this level of quarterback prospects, head Texas football coach Tom Herman should be mindful of what he needs to be looking for.

It seems as if Johnson and Card are the future at the position for the Horns, but depth and potential development quarterbacks are worth exploring to add depth. Variation in the quarterback room is important too since the Horns had a big benefit from keeping junior Shane Buechele in the mix behind Ehlinger in 2018. Buechele helped the Horns hang on to win two games this past season.

From the perspective of hauling in a developmental prospect for this recruiting class for the Horns, three-star pro-style quarterback Caleb Holstein would be a nice fit. This St. Thomas More and Lafayette, LA, native Holstein has the ideal size and a very good arm that could be one of the better under the radar signal callers in this cycle.

At 6-foot-5 and 210 pounds, Holstein does need to put on some muscle, but he does have some time to do that until he needs to take on a big role in his collegiate career. Especially if he lands with a program like Texas football or the LSU Tigers, he’d have to wait at least a year or two before his opportunity to start would come along.
