The grand prize for most teams at quarterback for the 2020 recruiting cycle is the St. John Bosco Five-Star elite prospect D.J. Uiagalelei. The issue for Texas football in the pursuit of this ultra-talented California native is that a ton of other nationally prominent programs are after his pledge too.

The two teams that competed for the 2018-19 College Football Playoff National Championship are two of the favorites to walk away with Uiagalelei’s commitment. But, the 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions gives the Clemson Tigers the early edge to land him, followed by the USC Trojans and Oregon.

Moreover, the main hurdle that the Horns are set to run into by pursuing Uiagalelei is the fact that he didn’t include them among his finalist schools. There was a list of seven finalists that he released which included the Georgia Bulldogs, Oklahoma Sooners, Alabama, Clemson, and LSU. Quite clearly, the Horns would have a lot of competition trying to come out of nowhere.

Uiagalelei did hold some interest in coming to the Forty Acres at one point so it is worth keeping the communication open with him. If Texas football has a big 2019 campaign behind the efforts of Ehlinger, then Uiagalelei could get more intrigue in coming to Austin. He’s rated as the nation’s No. 7 2020 high school prospect and the best quarterback overall.
