The abundance of talent in the secondary for Texas football entering the 2019 off-season is largely due to the job that Herman and defensive coordinator Todd Orlando did for the past two recruiting cycles. Herman and Orlando hauled in three five-star defensive backs in the past two Texas recruiting classes.

However, the cornerback spot isn’t set to be as deep as safety for the Horns in the coming year. Adding some underrated corner talent in future recruiting classes is pivotal to keeping the development up at the position. The defensive backfield has to consistently be a strength in Big 12 play for Orlando. It lapsed at times in Big 12 play in 2018 and proved costly.

Three-star Shadow Creek High School and Pearland, TX, cornerback Xavion Alford is the perfect example of a potent defensive back that is versatile enough to fill a few different spots for the secondary. Alford is classified as a 6-foot and 175 pound safety on 247Sports, but he can play there, at corner, or nickelback for the Horns.

If he does look further into the idea of giving his commitment to play on the Forty Acres, Alford could be a big part of the secondary in his second or third year with the program. He is more of a developmental talent with a very high ceiling. Don’t expect him to make an immediate impact if he lands with any blue blood. But, this is a very important recruiting target to start winning over from the in-state rival Texas A&M Aggies.
