Texas football could be an emerging favorite to land the underrated three-star Houston, TX, 2020 cornerback Joahua Eaton.

The 2020 Texas football recruiting class has a lot going for it right now. If it wants to continue the building momentum through the bulk of the 2019 off-season for the next full recruiting cycle, winning over some defensive prospects needs to happen soon. This Texas football recruiting class for the 2020 cycle looks good so far, but all the commits are either an athlete or fall on the offensive side of the ball.

Contrary to the past two recruiting classes for Texas football, this 2020 group is very heavy in favor of adding depth and talent to the offense. In-state underrated 2020 cornerback Joshua Eaton could change the narrative for this 2020 class for the Texas Longhorns. This three-star Aldine MacArthur corner ranks just outside the top 500 2020 high school prospects in the nation.

Moreover, head Texas football coach Tom Herman built up his recruiting prowess on the Forty Acres by way of defensive prospects. He also thrives when defensive coordinator Todd Orlando has plenty of resources to work with. Eaton would be an add that could thrive in Orlando’s defense.

His solid ball skills and lengthy frame present an ideal fit in this Horns secondary. He might not be the immediate impact type defensive back Texas football got out of rising sophomore safety, and former five-star recruit, Caden Sterns. But Eaton is a good developmental talent that could at least be a two-year starter on the Forty Acres.

Something will five soon to start the trend of defensive commits in this 2020 Texas football recruiting class this off-season. The 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions gives Texas football a nearly guaranteed shot to land the pledge of Eaton.

An encouraging sign in the recruitment of Eaton is that he has taken two visits since the turn of the calendar year with the Horns. He was present on campus a few weeks back for Junior Day and his offer sheet is really growing of late.

Eaton received a ton of offers during the month of February, including his from Texas on Feb. 16. A few of the other notable offers he holds came from the Texas A&M Aggies, Florida Gators, Oklahoma Sooners, Oregon Ducks, LSU Tigers, and Virginia Tech Hokies.

In a recent interview with SB Nation’s Texas Longhorns fan site Burnt Orange Nation, Eaton disclosed that his top schools alongside Texas football included Oklahoma, LSU, and Florida. That shouldn’t come as much of a shock to college football fans around the country since those are some of the more prestigious of his offers as of the morning of March 1.

A potentially worrying sign for the Horns in the recruitment of Eaton is that he got a recent offer from Texas A&M and took an unofficial visit on the same day, Feb. 28. Texas A&M doesn’t seem to be an early favorite to land Eaton, but head coach Jimbo Fisher is always a threat to creep into battles like this on the recruiting trail.
