Texas Basketball: 5 victory takeaways vs. Iowa State
5. Letdown for Iowa State’s starting five
One of the best starting fives through and through in the Big 12 this season was repped by Iowa State. The Horns did a fantastic job of keeping standout talents like Iowa State true freshman Talen Horton-Tucker to just five points on the day. Three of the five lowest scoring starters for the Clones were held to just a combined 12 points.
However, this was a different showing from the starting five for Iowa State, as there was only one player that managed to rack up double digit scoring. The former Virginia Cavaliers senior forward Marial Shayok led the way for Iowa State with 22 points. The next best scoring effort in this game for the Iowa State starting five came from junior forward Michael Jacobson, with eight.
It was the bench scoring from Iowa State at the outset of the game that at least kept things tight. When it came down to it, the Texas basketball defense was just too strong and the shooting was lights out for most of the game for the men in white and burnt orange.
Iowa State didn’t have a bad day shooting from the field, but couldn’t match up with the more than 50 percent for the Horns. Texas also shot 60 percent from beyond the arc which is hard to match for any team on any given day. When Texas is this hot, the Iowa State starters have to be more effective than they were here.
