Texas Football: Impact 2019 OT Willie Tyler brings
The Texas football program might have just found itself a difference maker to add to the offensive line via the recruiting trail with OT Willie Tyler.
This was a great two-day span for the Texas football program with spring camp just a handful of days away from officially beginning. The 2019 Texas football recruiting class isn’t quite done adding key pieces together for the roster come this fall. What this program was able to add on March 4 was no exception.
The only unranked commit so far in the 2019 Texas football recruiting class, and likely ever to be, came from the Iowa Western Community College 6-foot-7 offensive tackle Willie Tyler. Head Texas football coach Tom Herman and co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Herb Hand pursued Tyler very hard since the conclusion of National Signing Day this year.
Including players that are officially listed as transfers and commits now, the Texas Longhorns football program now has 25 players in store to either inject talent or make their way back to the Forty Acres in 2019. The only player among those 25 that was already on the Forty Acres is the former four-star dual-threat quarterback recruit and redshirt freshman Casey Thompson.
However, this is a big get for the Horns since Tyler did have some options that emerged after National Signing Day. He should be an immediately eligible injection to the offensive line that did have a lot of turnover heading into this off-season. Texas football lost out on three key seniors, including former graduate transfer offensive tackle Calvin Anderson and versatile guard Elijah Rodriguez.
Tyler is the second offensive line add for Herman and the Horns in the last two days. The former Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets offensive guard Parker Braun committed to Texas football out of the NCAA Transfer Portal on March 3. Texas now has two additional offensive linemen in the mix that it didn’t have at the end of February.

Moreover, Tyler didn’t get a recruiting ranking from 247Sports.
did rate him around a mid-level three-star offensive tackle which is pretty good for a JUCO recruit. And, Tyler held six offers before he announced his commitment to the Texas football program.
Texas was one of the programs on the offer sheet for Tyler that also included the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs, SMU Mustangs, and West Virginia Mountaineers. Tyler starting to get a lot more national attention after he received his offer from the Horns and his skill set was brought to the forefront.
What Texas football is getting out of Tyler is a sizable and strong offensive tackle that has a surprising amount of athleticism for his physical profile. Tyler brings to the type of physical tools to the table that you might expect out of a mature four-star JUCO offensive tackle.
Tyler does fit the profile of more of a developmental prospect, but that isn’t a bad thing. If Hand showed us anything last year, it’s that he can quickly turnaround a previously struggling offensive line. This is a big add for the Horns that can have an early impact this fall.
