Texas Football: Grading Longhorns 2019 analyst hires
The former Houston Cougars defensive backs coach Paul Williams is the latest addition from that program’s coaching staff under Texas football and Herman. Adding an assistant that has the experience of working with defensive backs at a solid Group of Five program like Houston is impactful for the Horns.
This is just an added bonus that Williams has experience working with Herman and defensive coordinator Todd Orlando and those schemes from each of those coach’s former program. Since Williams isn’t the most widely known name among these coaching hires, he’ll fly a bit under the radar.
Among these four coaching hires so far for the Horns, Williams has the lengthiest timeline of experience as an assistant and has an impressive resume to back it. Houston had one of the more talented defensive backfields in the American Athletic Conference last year, and Williams already sent a double-digit number of his players to the NFL.
Williams has experience at some other Power Five programs during his career as an assistant like the Illinois Fighting Illini and the Miami Hurricanes. It’s hard to argue that there could be a better fit to help this young room of defensive backs along for the Horns this year better under Herman and Orlando than Williams.
