What went wrong for Shaka Smart

We already detailed a bit of what went wrong for Smart and the Texas basketball program this season. Finishing up the regular season with a record near .500 and two games under in Big 12 play aren’t acceptable for a program that has the resources of Texas. Smart didn’t fully capitalize on the advantages he had in the front court and the deep rotation he had in general.

Texas clearly had one of the deeper and more talented rotations in the Big 12 this season, but weren’t able to take full advantage. Occurrences like the suspension of senior shooting guard Kerwin Roach Jr. and the constant foul trouble for freshman big man Jaxson Hayes are things that were out of Smart’s control.

But, owning a total record of 66-65 during his time on the Forty Acres is all that fans need to know as to why the days with this program could be numbered Smart. It was difficult to watch a program that consistently hauls in top 10 ranked recruiting classes in the nation, and pretty much always in the top two in the Big 12, fall so dramatically short of expectations.

The report of Smart being on the hot seat and “likely departing” after this season in the first place came courtesy of SB Nation’s Texas Longhorns alternative page Barking Carnival. It’s great to see Smart have so much success off the court, but it can be such a dumpster fire in the Frank Erwin Events Center for the Horns sometimes that Smart might be better off elsewhere.
