3. Level of urgency for the Longhorns and Shaka Smart

There are very few clear indications as to whether the Texas basketball program is planning on moving into the future with its current head coach or not. Nonetheless, this rotation is mostly made up of Smart recruits out of high school and they are all likely to leave it all out on the floor for him here in the Big 12 Tournament.

Head Texas basketball coach Shaka Smart had multiple reports emerge on March 10 saying he could potentially be out on the Forty Acres for this program following the end of the season. Unless Texas made a big run through the Big 12 and NCAA Tournament, many fans figure it necessary to move on with a new head coach next season.

However, there are some conflicting rumors that Smart could be still in as the head coach for the Horns next season. Brian Davis of the Austin-American Statesmen posted on his Twitter timeline on March 9 that he hasn’t heard anything about the rumored Smart departure for the Horns yet.

In terms of the logistics behind the hot seat for Smart, it all makes sense. A 66-65 record during his four years on the Forty Acres is unacceptable by the standards of most basketball fans for this program. A program with this many resources should be doing better than what he was able to accomplish during the regular season.
