Texas Basketball chasing elite 2020 Duke target SG Brandon Boston Jr.
Even though it would take a huge run from the Texas basketball coaching staff on the recruiting trail, it could chase down 5-star SG Brandon Boston Jr.
The recruiting trail hasn’t been kind to the Texas basketball program thus far during the 2019 calendar year. Texas basketball doesn’t have a single commit in store for the 2020 or 2021 recruiting classes, and there doesn’t look to be anything coming down the pipeline any time soon.
With some of the hot seat rumors steaming up around head Texas basketball coach Shaka Smart of late, things don’t look great for this program on the recruiting trail heading into the off-season either.
What could start to turn things around for the fortunes for Texas basketball recruiting in the coming months could be winning over an elite prospect like five-star 2020 shooting guard Brandon Boston Jr. This Norcross, GA, native is one of the nation’s top 10 ranked 2020 high school prospects and the top overall recruit out of the state of Georgia.
While it might seem like it would take something just short of a miracle for Boston Jr. to turn his focus completely to the Texas Longhorns basketball program at this point of his recruitment, that’s not truly the case. With how much change this coaching staff and roster for the Texas basketball program could undergo this off-season, there could be some new interest emerging on the recruiting trail to come to the Forty Acres.
However, Boston Jr. is a favorite to land with some of the nation’s top college hoops blue bloods like the Duke Blue Devils and Kentucky Wildcats. Boston Jr. holds 29 offers in all and has amounted a whopping 12 coach visits. He’s had three visits within the past four months either with a coach or to the campus of the University of Kentucky. Boston Jr. also officially received his offer for Kentucky basketball on Feb. 23.
Another big unofficial visit that he took was with the in-state ACC program that is hot in pursuit of his commitment right now, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. He had that unofficial visit with Georgia Tech back in January.
The predictions for where Boston Jr. will land at this point should boil down to Duke and Kentucky. Both are regional programs that carry a ton of weight on the recruiting trail. And, the 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions heavily favor Duke to get the pledge of Boston Jr.
What some of those aforementioned programs should take into account is the fact that competitors like Texas and Georgia Tech could make a legitimate run at landing Boston Jr.’s commitment. Texas has a big need pretty consistently at shooting guard and Boston Jr. has the type of talent that would allow him to make an instant impact on the Forty Acres.
Texas basketball was also one of the early programs to jump into his recruitment in the first place. He received his offer from the Horns back in May 2018, when he was just exiting his freshman year at Norcross High School. That can also carry a lot of weight in the recruitment of a skilled five-star recruit like Boston Jr.
With that in mind, Smart and the Horns will have to fight very hard and likely have an amazing showing in the Big 12 and NCAA Tournament to get Boston Jr.’s attention in the first place. It is certainly possible that he considers Texas when it’s all said and done for his recruitment.
