3. Backup Quarterback

For being such an unexpected spring camp position battle for the Texas football program, the backup quarterback spot on the depth chart is going to get a ton of attention. The transfers of two key quarterbacks from the 2018 roster thinned the depth and experience behind center quite a bit for Herman and offensive coordinator Tim Beck.

Largely due to the growing hype behind the former four-star dual-threat quarterback 2019 signee Roschon Johnson, the backup signal caller will get some heavy focus in spring drills. The spring football game will also be a fun sight to see who emerges as the clear favorite to slot behind rising junior Sam Ehlinger on the quarterback depth chart between Johnson and redshirt freshman Casey Thompson.

What Johnson brings to the table that could separate him from Thompson is a strong arm and the power to back his speed. Johnson is a speedier dual-threat quarterback than Ehlinger and makes his way to the Forty Acres as an early enrollee with a pretty polished arm compared to what Thompson brought last off-season.

Thompson is going to be the early favorite to win the backup job over Ehlinger, but it is surely something to watch throughout spring camp and into summer workouts. This is the time where Johnson could separate himself as a difference maker and the best option for the long-term starter after Ehlinger’s time with the Horns is over.
