Texas Football: 5 spring camp absences worth noting
4. Transferred Quarterbacks/Running Backs
The wave of transfers that hit for Herman and the Texas football program at the end of this past regular season was pretty intense. With the newly instituted NCAA Transfer Portal, the Texas fan base got the firsthand exposure as to what this process entails each and every off-season with the open market taking over.
It was the depth in the quarterback and running back rooms that was most concerning for the coaching staff. Texas has two quarterbacks and three running backs wind up intending to leave the Forty Acres this off-season. Running back depth loss was something that the Horns couldn’t afford either.
Most of this news dropped well before spring camp started, and some of the quarterbacks and running backs even had their names in the transfer portal before bowl season ended. The last to drop among the Horns skill position transfers this off-season came from fourth-year quarterback Shane Buechele, who landed in the same state at his next destination with the SMU Mustangs.
Texas is going to be very thin at running back, but quarterback should be just fine with four-star dual-threat quarterback signee Roschon Johnson enrolling early. It was also good to get redshirt freshman signal caller and fellow former four-star dual-threat quarterback recruit Casey Thompson back on the Forty Acres after his name was in the portal at one time.
