Texas Football: 5 question marks amidst spring camp
1. How consistent full pad practices shape up
It’s always more fun to get the players in full pad practices on the Forty Acres than just in shirts and shorts. When the players for the Texas football program are able to get in full pads for spring practice, we get to see a lot of where some of the more physically developed players are really at. It also shows how strength and conditioning coach Yancy McKnight was able to get some of the smaller guys built up.
McKnight did have a lot on his plate to get a multitude of younger players set to compete in the trenches ready to go to fill some big roles for the 2019 campaign. Part of the detriment of relying so much on some impactful but developmental recruits from the past two cycles is the uncertainty of physical maturity.
Texas had some players like Boyce, and the former five-star wideout early enrollees Bru McCoy and Jordan Whittington that were very pleasant surprises so far. This group of first and second year players from the past two recruiting cycles do still have a ton to improve upon since most didn’t get the chance to make an early impact last year.
With so many new players for the Horns getting big time reps this year, the full-pads practices will be a very telling sign. It’s an early taste for all these early enrollees to get some sign of game action before the fall and the coaching staff gets intel on some of the more important position battles.
