A frequently discussed injury for Texas football that could actually be very significant even at the outset of this season involves redshirt freshman defensive tackle Keondre Coburn. There was also the inclination that Coburn had some back pain arise that was directly tied to the ultimate issue he’s going through at the moment.

Texas has Coburn out of action now due to a kidney issue that was lingering from the 2018 season. All indications currently point to Coburn being ready for the 2019 campaign, but this is the type of issue that could hang around for a long time. Texas already lost Hudson due to lingering injuries that hampered him too much.

Herman did seem optimistic in his initial press conference in Coburn’s chances to be ready for the upcoming regular season. Coburn could even make his way back in time for the spring football game and for summer workouts. But, it might be best for him to take it slow until fall camp to compete for the starting defensive tackle job.

Coburn should be competing along with rising senior Gerald Wilbon for the starting defensive tackle spot. Another player that could come into play in spring camp to compete for time in the defensive line rotation is redshirt freshman Daniel Carson. Herman raved about the job that strength and conditioning coach Yancy McKnight did with players like Carson, to help him put on more than 30 pounds in weight over the off-season.
