One of the bigger question marks for the Texas football program in spring camp lies with the lack of depth in the running back room.

The Texas football program got off and running on the recruiting trail for the 2020 class with some big commits to add to an already solid offense. One piece that the 2020 Texas football recruiting class is still void of is running back talent, as some key targets haven’t announced yet. The coaching staff has to be thrilled about what five-star in-state elite rusher Zachary Evans brings to the table, but he doesn’t have a set announcement date yet.

In terms of what head Texas football coach Tom Herman and offensive coordinator Tim Beck are working with at the moment in the running back room, it doesn’t look too promising. Texas does have a clear starter in mind with rising sophomore Keaontay Ingram. Last year, Ingram had a big true freshman campaign with more than 800 total yards. He showed sparks of rounding out his game to already start the process of becoming a complete back.

Moreover, the problem for the Horns this season doesn’t concern Ingram. It’s whose behind him on the depth chart that is the most concerning. As it stands in spring camp, third-year running back Daniel Young could be the second in line for carries.

There’s a lot that depends on the health and recovery status of incoming freshman four-star Georgia native running back Derrian Brown. Earlier this year, Brown was hospitalized with what appeared to be a serious condition. But a lot of fans, teammates, former teammates, etc. rallied around him and supported his recovery. His status for the 2019 season remains up in the air it appears.

The uncertainty surrounding the running back depth needs some solution from the coaching staff. Nothing clear emerged yet to help this depth issue.

Here’s a look into some other intriguing running back ideas and potential solutions for the Texas Longhorns football program for the 2019 season.
