Texas Football: Intriguing alternative RB solutions
Dose of Derrian Brown and Kirk Johnson
The workload given to Brown this year largely varies based up how his recovery status is going through summer workouts and fall camp. What matters most is that he gets the support he needs and the coaching staff go through his recovery diligently and doesn’t rush anything back when he first makes his way to the Forty Acres.
Another option that the Texas football program could turn to this year that is intriguing to go along with Brown, Young, and Ingram, is one of the oldest running backs on the roster. The brother of rising senior All-Big 12 wide receiver Collin Johnson, rusher Kirk Johnson, had some injury issues in his collegiate career thus far that kept him off the field.
However, Kirk Johnson looks to be ready to go for a big senior campaign that could see a surprising breakthrough in the Big 12. In his career on the Forty Acres since 2015, Johnson has just eight carries for 44 yards. All of those rushing yards came for Johnson way back in 2015 too so it’s been a while since he was able to make any kind of impact.
The power and blocking ability that Johnson brings to the table could be something intriguing as a change of pace for the Texas ground game. It fits a similar role to what Young could do for the ground game, but Johnson is a bit bigger and had good hands as a recruit. He should at least get a shot with some carries this fall.
