Texas Football: Safety position taking massive spring injury hit
The Texas football secondary was already a concern with some roster turnover for the 2019 off-season looming, let alone with all these injuries emerging.
If only the Texas football program could keep everyone healthy throughout a spring or fall camp on the defensive side of the ball, we could get to see the progress coming together. But, for the second straight off-season, defensive coordinator Todd Orlando will have a pretty heavy injury bug to deal with ahead of the spring football game and/or camp drills.
Texas football is in the thick of spring drills for week two and the injury report is starting to expand. With a host of injuries that this program was already dealing with in spring camp before spring break hit, adding more to a key spot like safety is a hard factor to overcome. This rash of injuries to defensive backs also extends to the projected starting nickelback for the 2019 campaign.
Hopefully for the sake of this defense developing through summer workouts and fall camp, some of the depth players can step up and take on some leadership roles in the wake of these absences.
The first injury here that will keep a starting safety out of spring camp entirely occurred when the Freshman All-American Caden Sterns reportedly underwent knee surgery on March 26. The knee surgery for Sterns was to help with patellar tendinitis he was dealing with.
The other injury here to a starting defensive back that is worth noting went to rising sophomore transitioning nickelback B.J. Foster. Reportedly out with a concussion that will hold him out of spring ball indefinitely, Foster will be sidelined for at least the next month or two. This all adds up with rising senior safety Brandon Jones already out for the entirety of spring camp.
Here’s a look into the impact that each injury will have and what the depth situation looks like at safety in spring camp for the Texas Longhorns football program.
