Impact of B.J. Foster

At least for Foster this injury isn’t something that could be lingering from the previous season. It appears that Foster went into concussion protocol due to a hit he took to the head in full contact and full pad drills on March 25. This is something that can just be an unfortunate reality of full pad spring camp drills.

However, the transition for Foster to the nickelback position is clearly going to be hampered by this injury. Since he is out of spring drills indefinitely, Foster will have to watch from the sidelines as someone like junior defensive back Josh Thompson takes fills his shoes in the meantime.

Foster should still have the upper hand to get the starting nickelback spot. He’s just too talented to be edged out by someone who already had their shot at winning the starting job like Thompson. But, there is some depth here that could help fill his spot. And, head Texas football coach Tom Herman did mention that this injury is something that could be looming following the March 25 restart for spring practice.

Nickelback won’t have as much youth to fill in as safety does. Orlando just doesn’t have many freshmen that could help out here while Foster is going through concussion protocol and recovery. He’ll really have to get up to speed during summer workouts and fall camp to make sure this isn’t a rocky transition at the outset of the 2019 regular season.
