Texas Football: 5 takeaways post-initial spring scrimmage
5. Differentiating running back plans
It seemed like the best move for the offense for Texas football in spring camp would be to work forward with third-year former starter Daniel Young and rising sophomore Keaontay Ingram as the primary backs. Young showed out as a true freshman, but saw his workload dramatically decline down the stretch this past season.
Meanwhile, Ingram looks to still be a key figurehead in this Horns backfield. A few of the media members on hand on the Forty Acres for yesterday’s scrimmage didn’t even see the actual workload that Young got in this scrimmage. Whether it be from a lingering injury or just getting phased out of the mix looks to be up in the air.
However, Ingram shined alongside rising senior Kirk Johnson and freshman former five-star 2019 signee Jordan Whittington. Johnson and Ingram both have key rushing touchdowns during the scrimmage, and Whittington found himself amid a heavy workload. A few of those names are worth following throughout the remainder of spring camp too.
The emerging rotation at the moment for this Texas offense out of the backfield could consist of this trio of Whittington, Ingram, and Johnson. Depending on the health of both Johnson and Young, the third spot in the rotation could be a hard fought battle for the rest of the off-season. In this scrimmage, Johnson likely slotted himself ahead of Young.
