Texas Football: 5 takeaways post-initial spring scrimmage
3. Casey Thompson’s improving arm
Watching the redshirt freshman Texas football quarterback Casey Thompson sling it all over the yard in Austin on Saturday was a great sign of what could be to come for this position group. Entering the off-season, it looked as if the Horns could be on the brink of disaster with the quarterback transfers piling up in the NCAA Transfer Portal.
However, what’s proving to be huge for the Horns in this regard is the return of Thompson to the Forty Acres and the offensive scheme run by Herman and offensive coordinator Tim Beck.
Two other factors that also helped the quarterbacks for the passing game in this scrimmage were the surprising stability of the offensive line and the balance from the threat of all the potent skill position players. The ground game was big for the Horns, and the receiving corps might’ve been the best position group across the board.
None of this would be possible in coming together this easily without the solid play of Thompson. He is proving to be worthy of the backup job in case anything happens to star junior Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger. Thompson showed off some great throws to young receivers and used his mobility to his advantage while Ehlinger was missing due to an illness.
