Texas Football: 5 takeaways post-initial spring scrimmage
2. Defensive line projected starters emerging
We already mentioned what the defensive line looked like for the Texas football program in this spring scrimmage yesterday. Graham and Coburn are two potent talents that will come to the forefront for the Horns for at least the next two years. The kidney issues Coburn was going through are still an issue, but he’s performing at a high level at the moment.
Coburn could wind up battling with two other defensive tackles that had nice showings in this scrimmage. Rising senior Gerald Wilbon ran with the first-team line group, and redshirt junior D’Andre Christmas-Giles was with the third-team. Wilbon also capped the 2018 campaign in solid fashion with how he played against the Georgia Bulldogs in the Sugar Bowl victory.
However, Graham should be in good company among some of the projected defensive line starters for the Horns this coming season. He could be joined by the likes of either Coburn or Wilbon to anchor the line and a rising senior on the other edge with former B-Linebacker Malcolm Roach.
In general, it was a rather quiet day for Roach on the line. This does seem like a good move from the B-Linebacker spot, though, since rising senior Jeffrey McCulloch could fit there well. McCulloch could be a nice boost to the linebacking corps all-around as a starter. He’s performed well the last two springs, including an interception in this scrimmage.
