An option still worth exploring to fill the running back depth need for Texas football this off-season are some good players on the transfer market.

It might seem like a moot point by now, but adding to the running back position this off-season should still be a primary task at hand for this coaching staff for the Texas football program. This is an idea that the coaching staff is hopefully keeping in the back of their minds still.

The coaching staff already made some adjustments at running back ahead of the first spring camp scrimmage this off-season. An idea emerging of giving five-star 2019 wide receiver signee and early enrollee Jordan Whittington getting a heavy workload out of the backfield this year looks more and more realistic.

That is not a bad idea for head Texas football coach Tom Herman and offensive coordinator Tim Beck to give the best players on the team the ball as much as possible. But, having a more experienced running back in the mix than just Whittington and rising sophomore Keaontay Ingram makes a lot of sense.

Texas football does have two running backs rostered now that have a combined eight years on the Forty Acres. Those two backs are Daniel Young and Kirk Johnson and neither have a full year of starting experience at the position during their careers on the Forty Acres.

All this builds up to a situation where hitting the NCAA Transfer Portal to find an answer for the running back depth issue seems like a solid move. Texas needs a complete and balanced offense to make more headway in the Big 12 again this fall.

Here’s a look into the five best remaining running back options in the NCAA Transfer Portal at beginning of April for the Texas Longhorns football program.
