Who’s gone?

Since the Texas football program was hit with a rash of transfer announcements at the outset of this off-season, the NCAA Transfer Portal was mostly a detriment to the running back depth. Texas lost a handful of running backs earlier this calendar year including Kyle Porter, Tristian Houston, and Toneil Carter.

Of those aforementioned three running backs that departed the Forty Acres this year, Porter and Carter already committed elsewhere. Porter landed with the Houston Cougars on March 30 and Carter committed and signed with FCS Sam Houston State a few months back. Carter might be the most surprising of that bunch since he was once a promising true freshman for the Horns.

However, the host of outside running backs that could’ve been targets for Herman and the Horns that put their names in the transfer portal already thinned out a bit. A bunch of the running backs that were in the portal back at the beginning of the off-season are now off the transfer market as of April 1.

A few notable names that committed elsewhere already include Nebraska’s Greg Bell (committed to San Diego State), Ball State’s James Gilbert (committed to Kansas State), and Auburn’s Asa Martin (committed to Miami). The good news is that there are still a host of solid options for the Horns to reach out to in order to add depth to the running back room this year.
