Of all the hidden gems that are part of the transfer portal at this of the off-season, former Kent State Golden Flashes standout running back Justin Rankin is one of the best and most proven. With his departure to the transfer market, Kent State is without its projected starting running back for the coming season.

However, Rankin wouldn’t be the best athlete that the Horns have in the backfield this coming season. At 5-foot-9 and 211 pounds, there are some limitations that Rankin would bring to the Forty Acres. He would by no means be the set in stone starting running back, but he could contribute a lot next to Whittington and Ingram.

Landing Rankin for the Texas football program would be similar to what the former Ball State standout Gilbert can do for first-year head coach Chris Klieman and Kansas State. That could’ve also been an early big target for the Horns on the transfer market. According to the Record-Courier, Rankin announced his intentions to transfer out of Kent State back in November 2018.

Rankin totaled more than 2,300 total yards from scrimmage and 14 total touchdowns during his three-year career with Kent State. He also averaged 4.5 yards per carry over that same span of time. His versatility also shined through in the past three seasons with more than 80 career receptions for nearly 800 receiving yards.
