Position: Safety

The safety position figured to be an area of strength for this Texas football secondary amid a heavy off-season of turnover among the 2018 starters. Cornerback will have a few new faces in the rotation, but safety had more stability that was supposed to help ease the transition for the rest of the defensive backfield.

However, the struggle here is that three of the returning starters for this Texas secondary look to be out for the remainder of spring camp and the Orange-White Game on April 13. To form stability in the secondary, Texas could’ve got an early jump on things this spring. That won’t be able to come through yet.

Two of the key starters that will be missing action for the rest of drills and the spring football game include rising sophomore safeties B.J. Foster and Caden Sterns. Foster was in the midst of a potential position move to the starting nickelback spot, so his injury could impact that transition. He will have to wait until fall camp to get a jump on adapting to that new position.

We did already know that rising senior safety Brandon Jones was out for the entirety of spring ball, but the other two injuries hurt worse because of his absence. Jones is our due to an ankle surgery he had this past winter and Foster and Sterns got hurt in spring itself. Sterns has a nagging knee injury and Foster is going through concussion protocol.
