4. De’Gabriel Floyd

Position: Linebacker

Possibly the biggest storyline among all the injuries and limitations for this Texas football roster in spring camp goes to the elite early enrollee California native linebacker De’Gabriel Floyd. Due to some “stingers” he took during his high school football days at Westlake out in California, Floyd has not yet been cleared for full contact drills.

Considering there seems to be little progress on the front of getting Floyd ready for drills throughout the off-season, it’s hard to tell how this process is going for him. Floyd showed more maturity and development to his game than most other signees from the 2019 recruiting class. This injury issue is a shame since he looked ready to go for 2019.

Texas could use a linebacker like Floyd back in the mix to provide some depth after losing two key starters from the 2018 team. There was a level of anticipation that was growing that Floyd could immediately compete for a starting role or at least significant playing time. Enrolling early isn’t doing anything for Floyd at the moment.

If nothing else, getting the diagnosis out on Floyd’s lingering neck and head injuries ahead of spring ball was a good thing. The alternative, figuring it out just before the start of the coming season, is much worse given the nature of these circumstances. Hopefully we hear positive news coming out of the Horns camp pertaining to Floyd’s recovery soon.
