3. Sam Ehlinger

Position: Quarterback

Let’s preface here that rising junior Texas football quarterback Sam Ehlinger shouldn’t have any long-term ailments that keep him out of the mix through spring ball. The main concern was that he missed the initial spring scrimmage alongside a host of other playmakers on the offensive side of the ball that are set to be prominent contributors this fall.

Ehlinger missing in this initial scrimmage during spring camp pushed backup signal caller and redshirt freshman Oklahoma native Casey Thompson amid the first-team offense. Early enrollee and to-be true freshman dual-threat quarterback Roschon Johnson also saw a good amount of snaps with the second-team offense on March 30.

Thompson ran 105 plays in that scrimmage and looked impressive in the process. Yet, it still would be good for the Texas offense to have Ehlinger running with the first-team group on occasion before the spring football game at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium here in slightly under two weeks.

What kept Ehlinger out of the scrimmage last weekend was an illness that head Texas football coach Tom Herman mentioned shouldn’t be anything too serious that hampers him for long. It’s also important for the Horns star quarterback to get fully healthy for the spring game above anything else at this point of the off-season.
