Texas Football: Tom Herman, Sean McVay discuss offense ideas
The entire Texas football coaching staff could benefit from the exposure of bouncing ideas of LA Rams head coach Sean McVay at the Texas Coaches Clinic.
The off-season is an important time for the Texas football program to get exposure with different minds and resources to improve the routines at hand. Head Texas football coach Tom Herman got the opportunity to do that on April 6 during the Texas Coaches Clinic that featured the likes of New England Patriots legendary head coach Bill Belichick and Los Angeles Rams rising star coach Sean McVay.
Getting to bounce ideas off some of the top football minds in the NFL like Belichick and McVay is a chance that Herman is just too smart to pass up. But, this Texas Coaches Clinic is an event that Herman took to new heights the past two years. According to various reports, this clinic features more than 500 coaches for 2019.
And last year, the keynote speaker for the event was the former Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis. This year, it was McVay that highlighted the entire event and gave some great exposure to the entire Texas football coaching staff.
There are surely some big names that make their way through the Texas Coaches Clinic. Belichick is one that tends to fly under the radar, but still gives great tidbits to Herman and the rest of his coaching staff.
There couldn’t be a much better way for the Texas Longhorns football program to get things rolling before the spring football game next weekend. The Orange-White Game will round out spring camp, but this event gets the positive energy and ideas rolling through the Forty Acres at a fantastic time.
The fans should be excited about what’s to come for the 2019 campaign, and Herman getting to know coaches that are at the top of the NFL should allow them to buy into what he’s building.
Per that same 247Sports report, McVay mostly discussed offensive ideals and schemes with Herman and assistants like offensive coordinator Tim Beck. Since the Horns have so much talent coming onto the Forty Acres this off-season, tooling around with new ideas could be huge for the fall.
Watching the Rams shows off one of the best and most innovative offenses in the NFL today. That exposure for Herman can’t do anything but help out the creativity for the offensive side of the ball. Ideas from coaches like Belichick also helps out on the defensive side of the ball.
Herman even dove into specific schemes and formations that he and McVay were going through. Herman stated: “I think we talked red zone, we talked RPOs, we talked mid zone versus tight zone, so it was a good conversation.”
These types of occurrences for the Horns are important to follow to see if anything tangible changes for the fall. Herman is open to these types of experiences and should only help improve this program moving forward.
