Texas Basketball: 5 thoughts regarding Shaka Smart’s potential return
5. Another talented roster for 2019-20
There will be yet another opportunity for the Texas basketball program to reach new heights and finally make that NCAA Tournament run the fans so desire. Whether Shaka is the coach that will get them there is still yet to be known. Texas still has yet to win a game in the NCAA Tournament under the direction of Smart.
If we do know one thing, it’s that the Horns are definitely bringing back a talented roster for the 2019-20 regular season. The 2019 Texas basketball recruiting class is chalked full of four and five-star signees that could contribute right away. Four-star Missouri City, TX, shooting guard Donovan Williams and five-star center Will Baker are both players that can fill big needs in the rotation.
However, two pieces to get really excited about from the 2018-19 Horns squad include freshman point guard Courtney Ramey and sophomore forward/center Jericho Sims. In the midst of the injury absence for projected 2019 NBA Draft Lottery selection Jaxson Hayes, Sims stood out as mostly a part of the starting five through the NIT run.
Texas had a pretty talented and deep rotation aligned for this regular season, but didn’t make much of it. Smart needs to capitalize on the group he has returning, and the signees incoming, for the 2019-20 regular season. If not, that could be the final straw for him during what will be his five seasons on the Forty Acres.
