Texas Basketball: 5 thoughts regarding Shaka Smart’s potential return
2. Offensive identity
The idea that we will keep revisiting throughout the off-season is how Texas basketball plans to figure out the offensive identity that ultimately held them back for the past three or four seasons. This issue is wearing thin on the Texas basketball fans and the patience could run out if nothing comes through soon.
Figuring out what went wrong for the Horns starts with the lack of reliability for an offensive attack that could keep up game in and game out in the high-octane pace in the Big 12. Teams like the Iowa State Cyclones, West Virginia Mountaineers, Kansas, and Texas Tech usually have some of the more potent scoring paces. West Virginia did have itself a down season, though.
Texas needs to learn something from some of the top teams in the Big 12 this season to move forward with changes in mind. Smart needs to find the solution for this offense long-term. He could start with instilling a nicely spaced offense that runs through Ramey, Baker, and the potent sharpshooter Jase Febres.
The weapons that Texas needs to succeed are already on the roster. Smart needs to find a way to utilize all this offensive talent and potency that he has on one of the deepest rosters in the Big 12 coming back for the 2019-20 season. Before we know it, the start of that coming season will be here and Smart will be under the microscope again.
