#8 Casey Thompson – Quarterback

Redshirt Freshman (6-1, 190)

Casey Thompson was apart of the two quarterback class that Tom Herman brought in the 2018 recruiting cycle and he was redshirted his freshman year. While quarterbacks Shane Buechele and Cameron Rising opted to transfer this offseason, Thompson decided to pull his name out of the transfer portal and remain at Texas.

Thompson now has a clear path to back up Ehlinger in the quarterback room as he is only competing with early enrollee Roschon Johnson. With a year of experience in the program Thompson has the edge over Johnson at the moment, and the spring game will be big for both quarterbacks.

A dual-threat quarterback coming out of high school Thompson will look comfortable running the ball and escaping the pocket. While Ehlinger is a bruiser of a runner, Thompson has a different running style and could provide more explosive runs from the position. The biggest question surrounding Thompson is how he has developed as a passer, and we will see that first hand on Saturday.

With Ehlinger missing multiple games during his first two seasons at Texas due to injuries, its not out of the question that Thompson could be called upon to start a game or two in 2019.
